There was a similar Katee seed blend that I believe was called No Waste. That seed blend was great, but I can no longer find it. The No Mess was ok for a while, but now I'm seeing a lot of mess AND waste of small seeds that none of the birds eat. It's a big part of the amount in the bag. What has changed with this blend? I'm about ready to start buying my seed at a local pet store that sells in bulk. A little costlier, but I can buy only what my neighborhood birds will eat. I really like the convenience of ordering from Petco but don't need the mess in my yard. What happened to your No Waste blend?

I used to buy a version of this seed mix several years ago. The birds loved it, and I loved it because it really was waste free. I stopped feeding the birds after a family of feral cats started hunting the birds, but now that there is only one of those cats left—and she is too old to bother the birds—put out a feeder again and ordered more of this seed mix. I was disappointed to see, when it arrived, that it now contains cracked corn. I put it out anyway but the birds—even the Jays—have barely touched it.

Be aware that the tiny millet leaves tiny hulls behind on the ground! All my ground feeders love this - mostly doves, sparrows, juncos and the corn is the last to be eaten. But everyone loves something in this blend. I only wish the millet was hulled because it leaves behind little pieces thst thr birds chip off. Also makes it harder for birds to find food next time, they have to sort through the mess to find actual seeds. So cleanup is required.

Why do you include millet? I've read that it's a cheap filler seed. Also, what is canary seed?

I understand Barbies question. Millet is Indeed a filler. Sparrows like and are a pest bird. Song birds toss this FILLER to the ground as they do Not want. Throw Millet out in the wintertime when food is less available. Then it will eaten. en.
